Principles of Adult Learning
For the adult individuals the process of learning has some particularities the trainers need
to take into account when delivering any session:
The individual must be motivated to learn
Standards of performance should be set for the learner
The learner should be given guidance
The learner must gain satisfaction from the learning
Learning is an active, not a passive process
Appropriate learning techniques should be used
Methods should be varied (to suit different styles & ages etc..)
Time must be allowed to absorb & transfer the learning
The learner must receive reinforcement
There are different levels of learning requiring different methods & lengths of time
Adults are usually choosing their own strategy to learn depending on some factors. Some
of them are within the control of the learner:
Domestic circumstances
Own learning facilities
Personal motivation
Personality
Existing knowledge and skill
Learning style and skill
Resources available
There are also some factors beyond the learner control:
Course material, references, other sources
Support from colleagues
Technical support
Feedback on progress
The quality of tutoring
As trainers we can mainly influence the quality of training and tutoring through a careful
preparation and audience understanding, in order to adjust our teaching style and content to
the audiences expectations and motivations.
From this course package point of view, future students have support from many directions
like:
Written materials: Best Practice Law Enforcement Students Manual, Contact Directory,
Legislative compendium, case scenario, activities within the course material, checklists, lists
of key terms, SAQs, references.
Workshops: training sessions, round tables, training sessions, sharing experience,
discussions on applications of learning, sharing skills, networks, assessment
Administration: schedules, course material dispatches, joining instructions etc.
